Frequently Asked Questions
Can my child read your books?
I get asked this a lot! The short answer is that only you can make that decision, bearing your family's specific needs in mind.
If my books were films, most of them would be rated PG-13. But this doesn't mean that all my books are necessarily suitable for a young audience. Some of my books are written for a young adult audience: the Pendragon's Heir trilogy, Miss Sharp's Monsters, and most of the fairytale retellings. The Watchers of Outremer series, however, is intended for an adult audience, and older audiences are also more likely to enjoy The Prince of Fishes.

Do you write Christian fiction?
Like many authors, my faith is very important to me and it definitely informs everything I write. That said, if you're looking for stories with gospel presentations or conversion scenes, you won't find them here. Many of my characters are people of faith, but they might be Christian, Muslim, Taoist, or something else. My primary goal is to write stories and people who are true to their own beliefs and their own times, whatever those might be. As a Christian, I believe that's an important part of loving my neighbour as myself and telling the truth about God's world!

Can you give me feedback on my novel?
I love to help aspiring authors hone their craft. I provide detailed manuscript critiques/development edits to fellow authors at the rate of AU$7.50 per 1000 words (approximately US$5). I will help you to hone your characterisation, plot, theme and setting at a high level. Feel free to email me if you'd like to inquire about my availability.
If you're not sure whether now is the right time for you to pay for a development edit, or if you want to hone your craft on your own, or if you haven't read them already, then I would highly recommend the following resources:
The Anatomy of Story by John Truby
Story by Robert McKee
Techniques of the Selling Writer by Dwight V Swain
Conflict and Suspense by James Scott Bell
The Fantasy Fiction Formula by Deborah Chester
Creating Character Arcs by K M Weiland
Structuring Your Novel by K M Weiland
Jim Butcher's Livejournal
